SCROLL DOWN TO ORDER SCREWS
The photo shows the difference between the typical pocket hole screw (left) and Kreg pocket hole screws. The Kreg screws (middle and right) have thicker steel where the head meets the shank, so they’re stronger and nearly impossible to break. The washer head (right) on the Maxi-Loc(TM) screw provides more surface area so the screw head doesn’t crush into the bottom of the pocket hole and go in deeper than desired, and makes it a lot more difficult to accidently strip-out the screw. The washer head is especially valuable when the pocket hole is cut in soft material like plywood or softwoods.
Other features include a larger type-17 slot for better self-tapping, a bronze color and a dry-lubricant coating for easier driving and greater rust-resistance. For maximum rust-resistance all-weather screws are available.
Guidelines for Screw Selection
Thread Pitch
When the material is hardwood use fine thread. Coarse thread can split hardwoods. Use coarse thread into softwood, plywood, particle board, and MDF.
Washer Head
When pocket is in soft material use a washer headed screw to keep head from crushing into bottom of pocket and going in deeper than expected.
Length
1-1/4" is standard length. The depth collar can be used to make a pocket hole shallower so less screw protrudes, however, as the screw head rises in the pocket hole it may make it difficult to plug the hole. In these cases use a 1" screw. The SML-C1 works great for making drawer boxes in 1/2" Baltic birch plywood. The SPS-F1 is great for attaching drawer fronts to drawer boxes without pre-drilling.
