Saw Power
The matching of saw power and mill size is important to satisfactory operation of the Alaskan Saw Mill Attachment. A rule of thumb is the more power the better. Ripping is tougher on a saw than cross-cutting, so the saw needs more power. Any saw will rip less width than it will cross-cut. The more power the saw has the faster it will rip and the longer the saw will last.
For the Mini-Mill a 50+ cc saw is recommended. The Small Log Mill will also operate with a 50cc, but a 60+ cc saw is desirable for efficient operation.
The minimum power saw you will need for the 24" mill is 60+ cc with a 24" bar and ripping chain. A 70+ cc power head is the minimum for the 30", 80-90+ cc for a 36" mill, a 100+ cc motor can be used with the 48", and a 120+ cc motor is necessay for the 56" mills. If possible, use the 120 cc motor, which is much more efficient, on either of the two larger mills (48" and 56"). All major brands of chainsaw will fit these mills.
For the C2 Series saw mill products the double-ended bars are much longer than conventional bars and the power must be increased to compensate. Figure on adding 20 cc's to the specs of your power head for proper operation of these mills. For the larger mills, dual power head operation must be considered.
Again, the more power the better!
Mounting/Dimensions
Sawmill sizes are in terms of the saw bar size, not cut width. The mill itself consumes from 4-5" in the mounting mechanism but is adjustable to fit saws with bars of lesser length. The cut width is what is left over after mounting the saw less a little for clearance. On a 24" mill the cut width is 20-21". The board thickness range on all mills is 1/2" to 13".
Lubrication
For proper operation use plenty of oil. If use is occasional and for short periods of time, the saw's oiler may be sufficient. For longer periods or regular use, the oiler attachment (GI-G801A) is recommended.
Ripping Chain
For best results a ripping chain is highly recommended. This chain type is designed to cut faster and smoother with less power.
Sharpening
And, of course, sharp chain cutters are essential to proper operation and reduced wear and tear of the mill and chainsaw. The Precision Grinder (GI-G1012C) is a high quality tool specifically design to properly sharpen chains.
