Inventions, Technical
and Ergonomic Advances,
Notable Achievements

1867
At the age of only 25, Wilhelm Emil Fein sets up a mechanical workshop in Stuttgart, Germany, with his brother Carl.
1873
FEIN attracts the attention of the scientific world by building the first electro-medical apparatus.
1875
FEIN invents the first electric fire alarm.
1878
The first of many, is the FEIN installation of the first fire alarm system for the city of Stuttgart, Fein led the field in fire alarm technology.
1878
The FEIN telephone is the first to use horseshoe-shaped magnets, the beginning of FEIN's development into a leading manufacturer of public and private telephone systems.
1880
FEIN improves the electric generator to a quality level which makes them feasible for use in power stations. The significant impact of this development leads to the perfection of electric power lines in the 1890s and results in several new designs.
1880s
In addition to electric generators, throughout the 1880s and 1890s, FEIN develops lighting plants and power transmission systems, various devices for measuring, regulating and relaying current along with lighting equipment for theater stages.
1885
FEIN produces the first portable telephone.
1887
FEIN produces the first mobile electric light system which in turn leads to lights for elevators and systems for internal and external lighting on ships.
1888
Publication and praise for a noteworthy book "Electrical Apparatus, Machinery and Equipment" written by Wilhelm Emil Fein for teaching purposes.
1891
Wilhelm Emil Fein is awarded the Golden Medal of State by King Karl of Wurttemberg in recognition of the high standing he and his company had achieved both within Germany and abroad. At this time, the FEIN product line encompassed a wide range of electro-technical applications such as: instruments for physics, electrotherapeutic equipment, electric clocks, telegraph equipment, fire alarm systems, water level gauges, telephone systems, lighting and power transmission systems, steam-driven generators.
1895
A history-making invention, FEIN builds the world's first electric hand drill. This ancestor of FEIN's modern day high performance power tools is considered the first power tool in the history of technology.
1897
FEIN produces the first bench drill.
1898
FEIN presents the first portable drill with flexible shaft and the first drill using aluminium components.
1900
FEIN introduces the first drill with reduction gearing and ball bearing.
1901-1913
During this period, FEIN produces the first electric hand drills to feature: geared layshaft, three different drilling speeds, overload protection and a universal motor for direct and single-phase alternating current. Also, the first drill with switch integrated into the handle and with removable breastplate and detachable clamping wheel.
1903
FEIN introduces the first stationery grinding motor.
1906
FEIN develops the first hand-held grinding motor.
1908
Due to overwhelming success and progress in many areas of industrial production and trade, Emil Fein (son of the founder) decides to specialize and the Company becomes the first 'Specialty Manufacturer of Power Tools'. This marks the start of a process, which in the decades that followed, established many landmarks on the road to creating a range of over 200 different high performance power tools, high.
1914
FEIN introduces the first high performance power tool for direct and three-phase alternating current.
1918
FEIN presents the first electric hand drill with three drilling speeds and an AC/DC motor.

1920s
FEIN ergonomics come into play with the emergence of four basic handle designs: pistol, spade, cross and stick. FEIN introduces the electric screwdriver.
1925
FEIN celebrates its 100,000th machine... a FEIN electropneumatic hammer.
1927
A FEIN innovation, the first electrically powered sheet-metal shears.
1928
FEIN presents the first electric handsaw.
1930s
Three-phase induction motors enjoyed increasing success so to accommodate the woodworking industry, FEIN fits these motors to new circular saws, milling heads, planers and screwdrivers. For metalworking: sheet metal shears, surface grinders, thread cutters and small screwdrivers are developed.
1934
The adoption of completely new insulated housing and subsequently the first electric hand drill in a housing made from insulating material.
1950s
FEIN adds high frequency power tools to their product range.
1952
FEIN develops the first power hacksaw for steel pipes and profiles.
1953
FEIN introduces the first high-frequency angle grinder and the first impact wrench.
1955
FEIN improves their power tool line with double-insulating starting with the first double-insulated FEIN angle grinder.
1956
FEIN presents the first hand drill with electrostatic suppression.
1967
FEIN becomes the first manufacturer in the world to introduce solid-state electronics for industrial drills.

Subsequent to this, there have been many FEIN firsts. FEIN has participated in, supported and adopted into their power tool program, numerous technological developments like:
Increased power/weight ratio of great importance is continuously improved.

Development of high-grade plastics resulting in impact-resistant and abrasion-proof housings of high dielectric strength and in the ability of power tools to cope with overloads in various situations.

Micro-electronics now an integral element in power tools allowing control of operating characteristics such as motor speeds, rotating speeds, stroke rate, torque, rotation angle.

Battery operation the establishment of cordless battery-operated electric power tools.

Robot tools considered a specialist in the robot market, FEIN robot tools are developed specifically for flexible automation and consistent top performance.

Dust extraction reducing the burden on operators and the environment to a minimum with dust collection and disposal.

In recent years, the achievements become more technical and detailed to list, however some of the more significant recent FEIN innovations are

1980s
FEIN invents power tools with high-speed oscillating action, such as a sheet-metal saw and a special electric cutter.
1986
The FEIN SANDER completes the family of oscillating tools. A revolutionary invention which guarantees efficient and effective removal action from several directions on practically all materials.
1986
FEIN sets new standards in the field of ergonomic design with the introduction of the FEIN kinetic tool handle. FEIN accutec screwdrivers lead the field when it comes to precision torque control and operator comfort.
1987
FEIN presents the first safety angle grinder with its new electro-mechanical brake system reducing grinding run-down times to a minimum.
1989
FEIN's introduction of the one-hand angle grinder with rapid clamping system (quick-change), ensuring quick and safe wheel change without the need for tools.
1994-1997
Introduction of a range of FEIN accessories for the oscillating sander and special cutter turning them into not only unique but multi-purpose tools. Enabling them to be universally used for all kinds of extremely detailed sanding and cutting, polishing, scraping and much more on practically any material.
1997
FEIN introduces the 'Handymaster' three in one tool, a cordless drill, hammer drill and screwdriver featuring two interchangeable battery positions.
